Privacy Policy
Last updated: August 31, 2026
This policy explains what personal information Motiva collects, why, who we share it with, and the choices you have. Motiva is operated by SMK Labs, Inc. (“we”, “us”), the data controller.
1Information we collect
- Account & identity — your email, and (if you sign in with Apple or Google) your name and profile photo. We honor Apple’s Private Relay email. We do not collect passwords (sign-in is passwordless, or via Apple or Google).
- Your activity in the app — the moods you log, the focus tasks you generate and complete, your written reflections, your streak history, and your quote-category preferences.
- Marks you add to a task (optional) — a photo and/or a short note you choose to attach to a task you finished. Photos are taken with your camera or picked from your library, and are stored privately for you. Nothing reviews them — not a person, not automated systems — and they are never shown to anyone else, never used for advertising, and never used to train AI models. You can delete a mark at any time, and deleting your account deletes its photos.
- Subscription — your purchase and entitlement status, via Apple/Google and RevenueCat. We never see or store your card details.
- Device & usage — app events, device model and OS version, language, IP address, and crash diagnostics, used to run and improve the app.
- Notifications (when enabled) — your device push token and notification preferences.
2How we use your information
- To provide the daily loop — a quote for your mood, focus tasks, streaks, and reflections.
- To process your subscription and unlock Premium features.
- To send notifications you’ve enabled, and to respond to your support requests.
- To keep the app secure, debug problems, and improve the product.
- To comply with legal obligations.
Where the GDPR applies, we rely on your consent (e.g. notifications), performance of our contract with you (providing the app), and our legitimate interests (security, improvement).
3We do not sell your data
We do not sell your personal information, and we do not use it for third-party advertising. Motiva has no ads.
4AI processing
Motiva uses AI to turn your mood and a quote from our library into suggested focus tasks. For this, your selected mood and the quote are sent to our AI provider (Anthropic) to generate suggestions. Your mark photos and notes, name, and email are never sent to the AI. Nothing you add to a task is reviewed, scored, or verified — by AI or by us. AI-generated tasks are suggestions only — see the “not advice” note in our Terms.
“What Motiva remembers” (optional, off by default). If you turn this on, two further things are sent with the above: your answer to the evening question “one thing to carry into tomorrow”, so the next morning’s task can follow on from it, and a mood you describe in your own words rather than picking from our list, so the task starts from where you actually are. These are the only things you write that ever leave Motiva for the AI provider. Your other reflection answer, your marks, your photos, your name and your email are never included.
You control it in three ways: it does nothing until you switch it on; each evening you can exclude that night’s answer with a single switch; and you can withdraw permission entirely at any time under You → Your words → What Motiva remembers, which stops it immediately. Withdrawing does not delete anything you have already written — see section 8. Your answer is used to write that task and is never used to train any AI model.
5Who we share information with
We share personal information only with the service providers below, who process it on our behalf under contract to run Motiva — none for advertising.
| Provider | Purpose | What it receives |
|---|---|---|
| Supabase | Database, authentication, file storage, hosting | Account + app data (moods, reflections, tasks, streaks) and mark photos, in private storage |
| Anthropic | AI task generation | Your mood + a library quote — and, only if you enable "What Motiva remembers", your one carry-forward reflection line and any mood you write in your own words (never your marks, photos, name or email) |
| Apple / Google & RevenueCat | In-app purchases & entitlements | Purchase/subscription status, an app user ID |
| PostHog | Product analytics | Usage events, device info |
| Sentry | Crash & error diagnostics | Error/diagnostic data, device info |
| Better Stack | Server logs | Operational log data |
| Apple Push | Notifications (when enabled) | Device push token |
| Railway / Vercel | App & website hosting | Requests to our servers |
We may also disclose information if required by law, or to protect our rights, our users, or the public.
6Where your data is stored
Motiva is operated from the United States, and your information is stored and processed in the US. If you access Motiva from outside the US, you understand your information is transferred to the US, which may have different data-protection laws than your country.
7How long we keep it
We keep your information while your account is active and as needed to provide the service. When you delete your account (section 9), we delete your personal data, except limited records we must retain to comply with law or resolve disputes. Backups are purged on a rolling basis.
Mark photos are kept until you remove them — they are yours to keep, not something we hold temporarily and discard. Removing a mark deletes its photo from storage, and deleting your account deletes every photo you added.
8Your rights & choices
Depending on where you live (e.g. the EU/UK under the GDPR, California under the CCPA), you may have the right to access, correct, delete, export, or object to the processing of your personal information, and to withdraw consent. To exercise these, use in-app account deletion (section 9) or email [email protected]. You may also complain to your local data-protection authority.
9Deleting your account
You can delete your Motiva account and its associated personal data at any time from within the app (Settings → Delete account), or by emailing [email protected]. Deletion removes your moods, reflections, tasks, and streak history.
10Children
Motiva is not directed to children under 13 (or under 16 where required by local law), and we do not knowingly collect their information. If you believe a child has provided us information, contact us and we will delete it.
11Security
We protect your information with encryption in transit, access controls, and reputable infrastructure providers. No method of transmission or storage is 100% secure, but we work to protect your data and to notify you of material breaches as required by law.
12Changes & contact
We may update this policy; we’ll post the new version with an updated date and, for material changes, give notice in the app or by email. Questions? Contact SMK Labs, Inc. at [email protected], or 2810 North Church Street, Wilmington, DE 19802, United States.
