Relationships

Attention, mostly.

Almost everything that makes relationships better is a form of attention, and almost everything that erodes them is its absence. Not conflict — most relationships do not end in an argument. They thin out.

The tips here are ways of paying it. Ask a follow-up question instead of moving on to your own story. Reflect back what you heard so the other person knows it landed. Put the phone face down, which is a smaller act than it sounds and a louder signal than you expect.

The rest is deliberate maintenance. Schedule the regular check-in, because the relationships that survive busy years are the ones with something in the calendar. Notice growth out loud. Make people feel chosen rather than merely tolerated — almost nobody hears that often enough, including the people closest to you.

Where to start

8 things to try

Each carries one action step — the part you actually do.

Active Listening

When someone is speaking, focus completely on understanding them rather than planning your response. Make eye contact, ask clarifying questions, and paraphrase what you heard to confirm understanding.

Do thisPractice active listening in your next conversation, focusing entirely on understanding the other person.

Ask a follow-up question

The difference between polite and interested is often one more question. When someone answers, asking 'and how did that feel?' shows you're actually engaged rather than waiting for your turn.

Do thisAsk at least one follow-up question in each conversation today.

Reflect back what you heard

Say a short version of what someone just told you before you add your own view. It confirms you were paying attention and gives them a chance to correct any misread before it grows into a misunderstanding.

Do thisOnce today, start a reply with 'So what I'm hearing is...' and let them confirm or adjust.

Schedule a regular check-in

Waiting for problems to surface on their own means they usually surface as fights. A calm, recurring time to ask 'how are we doing?' lets small things get named before they grow teeth.

Do thisPropose a short weekly check-in to someone close to you.

Make them feel chosen

People want to know they're wanted, not just tolerated or convenient. Telling someone specifically why you value having them in your life reminds them the relationship is a choice you keep making.

Do thisTell one person today, in plain words, that you're glad they're in your life.

Notice growth out loud

People rarely get told when they've handled something better than they used to. Naming a change you've seen, 'you stayed so calm there,' reinforces it and tells them their effort was seen.

Do thisPoint out one way you've watched someone grow, and say it to them today.

Learn their love language

People give and receive care in different ways, words, time, help, touch, small gifts. Noticing how someone naturally shows love usually reveals how they most want to receive it, so you can meet them there.

Do thisWatch how someone shows care today, and offer it back to them the same way.

Put the phone face down

Undivided attention is one of the plainest gifts you can give someone. When your phone is out of reach, the person in front of you feels like the priority, and the conversation actually goes somewhere.

Do thisDuring your next meal with someone, leave your phone in another room.
